BIOGRAPHY
I grew up fourth in a family of five children, having been born and raised as an erstwhile Huck Finn in Hastings, Minnesota, a sleepy town on the Mississippi River. In 1983, I graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in Biology from Saint John's University in Minnesota not far from Lake Wobegon. In 1988, I finished my M.D. degree at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis before moving to San Francisco.

A doctor for thirteen years, I have been a writer for more than twenty – penning hundreds of articles since my teens. Naturally, the highlight of my writing career thus far is the publication of my first book Of Spirits and Madness: An American Psychiatrist in Africa (McGraw-Hill, 2001).

I have also written for DoubleTake, JAMA, the San Jose Mercury News, and the St. Cloud (Minnesota) Daily Times. During a one-year hiatus from medical school, I wrote sports and features for the Minnesota Daily. I started my journalism career in high school, writing sports and features for my hometown weekly, the Hastings Star-Gazette.

I produce and host a weekly radio program called "Health, Mind, and Body" on one of San Francisco's public radio stations -- KALW 91.7 FM. The show gives me the opportunity to talk to experts about relevant public health issues of the day. I have interviewed such notables as National Book Award winner Andrew Solomon, and prominent doctor/writers such as Andrew Weil, Irv Yalom, and Atul Gawande.

Board-certified in 1997, I work now as an emergency psychiatrist at San Francisco General Hospital. I see patients and teach clinical psychiatry to medical students, interns, and residents on the apprenticeship model. I am an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine, where I finished my specialty training in psychiatry in 1992.

In addition to working in Africa, my wife Laurie and I have traveled extensively throughout the world. Nowadays, we live in San Francisco. I split my time as evenly as possible between being a good husband, an active father of two boys under the age of four, a writer/radio producer, and working as a psychiatrist.
